Abstract

The traditional ways of packaging food items are no longer aligned with the consumer’s desire or their
needs. So, companies have come up with new ideas and emerging technologies to satisfy consumers. One such
attempt is IoT-driven packaging that helps in reducing food wastage, bio-degradable and sustainable
practices, and coping with food safety and uncompromised quality detection. Though there are many
advantages, there are also disadvantages, such as disposal of the waste meat or dairy products that pollute
the environment. This is a case study undertaken based on literary sources, previous real incidents that are
published in newspapers and court proceedings. In this study, various technologies that were used, methods
of packaging, the status of food by tracking during transportation, the challenges ahead in the journey until
it reaches the consumer, effects of disposal, the efficiency of technologies, and their opportunities in India are
discussed. The study suffers from some limitations as it is based only on secondary resources for the study.
Keywords: IoT- driven packaging, bio-degradable, efficiency of technologies, opportunities and challenges.
