Employee engagement is a term which denotes the relationship that exists between the employee and the employer of an organization. Employee engagement is defined as "the harnessing of organisation members' selves to their work roles; in engagement, people employ and express themselves physically, cognitively, and emotionally during role performances" (Kahn 1990). Employee engagement is the level of commitment that an employee has towards his/her organization. An engaged employee is presumed to be known about the entire context of business, works dynamically with colleagues, interested in the peer groups and strives to improve the performance of the organization. Employee engagement is one of the prime tools which keep employees engaged and which also helps in retaining talent as well. In a research report by Waseem Khan and Yawar Iqbal Kiflemariam Hamde (2013) it has been reported that, there is strong positive relationship between work motivation (intrinsic & extrinsic) and employee engagement of bank employees. Both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation has some impact on employee engagement. Respondents were selected by snow ball method of sampling. The data was collected using a well-structured and pre-tested questionnaire. The collected data were analysed using SPSS. Statistical tools like Correlation, Multiple Regression and Structural Equation Modeling were done. The results indicate that extrinsic motivation was found to be significant for both employee performance and employee engagement and further, the employee performance has less impact on employee engagement. The results will be of use in general to increase the level of employee performance and engagement working in IT, Education, Manufacturing and in banking sector. Further, the results have opened up new dimensions to probe further research in this area.
