Abstract

Performance and Experimental Analysis of Al-Al2O3 Metal Matrix Composites P. Gurusamy V. Muthuraman S. Hari Krishna Raj J. Lokesh Kumar

Automobiles are using heavy materials which reduce mechanical efficiency, thermal efficiency and fuel consumption are increasing vice versa. To overcome these issues composite materials have been used as an alternative material in all the manufacturing sectors. Because composites have high strength, stiffness, and a very low coefficient of thermal expansion, which are recommended for structural applications. The behaviour of materials is based on the selection of matrix materials and reinforcements. Hence the selection of matrix and reinforcements play a vital role in the fabrication of composites. In this paper, Aluminium has been taken as matrix material and Al2O3 is taken as reinforcement (5%). Matrix material (Aluminium) has got very good physical and chemical properties but the toughness is moderate similarly the reinforcement (Al2O3) has got poor electrical conductivity. Fabrication of this combination would yield a better result. In this paper, the investigations of 690,740,790 and 840° C melting temperature of Aluminum Alloy A356 was carried out and its effects were studied. The best-resulted sample is taken for the microstructural analysis with various magnifications.
