Abstract

The academic performance of college students is greatly influenced by various socio-economic factors that affect their educational opportunities, learning environment, and psychological well-being. This study focuses on examining the influence of socio-economic issues on the academic performance of arts college students in the Chengalpattu District. The research investigates how factors such as family income, parental education, occupation, financial instability, access to educational resources, transportation facilities, nutrition, and social environment impact students’ academic achievements. Students from economically weaker backgrounds often face challenges including lack of study materials, part-time employment pressures, poor living conditions, and limited access to digital learning facilities, which negatively affect their concentration and academic outcomes. The study also explores the role of parental support, peer influence, and institutional assistance in shaping students’ educational performance. Using a descriptive and analytical research approach, data may be collected from arts college students through questionnaires and interviews to understand the relationship between socio-economic conditions and academic success. The findings of the study are expected to reveal that socio-economic inequalities significantly influence students’ attendance, motivation, learning ability, and overall academic performance. The study concludes that effective policy measures, financial assistance schemes, counseling services, and educational support systems are essential to reduce socio-economic barriers and improve the academic progress of arts college students in Chengalpattu district.
