Abstract

Self-Help Groups are small voluntary associations consisting mainly of women from similar socio-economic backgrounds. Members regularly save small amounts of money and provide loans among themselves. SHGs help women become financially independent and socially empowered. In Tamil Nadu, SHGs have become an important tool for poverty reduction and rural development. Recent studies conducted in Chengalpattu district show that SHGs significantly improved the socio-economic status of women through microfinance, entrepreneurship, and awareness programs
