Abstract
Siddha medicine is an ancient medical system of the Tamils. It emphasizes the balance of body, mind,
and soul. Elements of Siddha medicine are deeply rooted in Tamil literature. In Sangam literature, references to
the medicinal uses of natural plants and methods of curing diseases with herbs are found. In Thiruvalluvar's
Thirukkural, subtle ideas about the cause of disease, its nature, and methods of treatment are present. The Kural
(couplet) "Noi Nadi Noi Mudhal Nadi Adhu Thanikkum Vaai Nadi Vaayppa Seyal" (Diagnose the disease, find
its root cause, and then find the right way to alleviate it effectively) explains the fundamental principle of Siddha
medicine. In later literary works like Silappatikaram and Manimekalai, references to herbs and surgical methods
are also found. The songs/poems of the Siddhars are treasures of Siddha medical science. The Thirumandiram by
Thirumoolar and the songs of Siddhars like Agathiyar and Bogar extensively explain various aspects such as
disease diagnosis, preparation of medicines using herbs, metals, and minerals, and yogic practices. These literary
works convey the philosophy of Siddha medicine and its scientific nature to the world. Through Tamil literature,
Siddha medicine has developed into a unique literary tradition and stands as a treasure trove of Tamil knowledge.
