Abstract

Consumption traditionally means consuming products by the consumers. Sustainable
consumption is literally opposite to the word consumption. Sustainable consumption
fulfils the needs of the human by means of products and services while reducing the
negative impact viz., exploitation of natural resources, using of toxic materials which
affects the environment and prejudicing the future generation. Sustainable
consumption focusses on the welfare of the environment and also fulfils the needs
of the future generation. In the modern society, intervening in the consumer behaviour
contradicts the idea of consumer sovereignty and also reduces the economic growth
as consumption plays a dynamic role in the economic development of a country.
Consumers basically will not concentrate on the sustainability rather they may be
influenced by the price of the products, availability of the goods, convenience of
usage etc., More resources are needed to attain the sustainable consumption.
Production pattern has to be noticed to make the conversion towards greener and
more socially comprehensive global economy. Intensive efforts from public and
private sectors are required to increase resource efficiency, production and
consumption patterns. Individuals also responsible for the sustainable consumption
and the justifiable consumption gained global attention in 19721. Stringent National
