Abstract

Interferons are proteins produced by a large number of cells in the inflammatory response to infections. Their synthesis is triggered by the immune system in response to infections or cytokines. Interferons connect to certain cellular receptors and stimulate the production of second messengers as well as the expression of antiviral and immune-modulating genes. According to research, interferons may also be beneficial in the treatment of other viral, autoimmune, and neoplastic diseases of the nervous system.
