Abstract

Musa acuminata is a broad-leaved evergreen plant that has traditionally been used in therapy and indigenous medicine use. This study was proposed to design a nanogel with a separated substance of the Stem Extract of the Musa acuminata in order to make it more efficacious and stable, and increase the level of bioaccessibility. The isolated compound was able to be formulated into a nanogel and formulated into a gelling agent. The resultant nanogel possessed a mean of zeta potential of −4.17 ± 0.13 mV, which implies colloidal stability. Evaluation of the nanogel showed good homogeneity, proper pH value (5.51 ± 0.21), proper viscosity (4356.16 ± 77.75 cP) and good spreadability (6.13 ± 0.58 g·cm/s). Scratch assays on 3T3 L-cell lines and albino rat excision model in vivo were used to determine the wound-healing potential. The percentage of wound contraction that was observed was 99.5 + -0.90% for the nanogel treated group, 97.8 + -1.10 % for the standard drug group and 70.3 + -0.99 % for the control group. Statistically, the nanogel group had a significant change (p < 0.05) as compared to the rest of the groups. In conclusion, nanogel formulation having the isolated compound from Musa acuminata stem extract exhibited a better wound-healing property, and thus, it may be targeted as a potential topical delivery system with an augmented therapeutic benefit.
