Abstract
A cyclic compound or ring structure that has atoms of more than one element (such as sulfur, oxygen, or
nitrogen) in its ring, is called a heterocyclic compound. Benzotriazole is a type of heterocyclic compound
that has nitrogen in it. It has three nitrogen atoms at the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd positions of the ring. Each
nitrogen atom has a lone pair of electrons that is not shared with other atoms. This makes the fivemembered ring have many medicinal effects, such as killing or stopping the growth of microbes, protozoa,
fungi, worms, and mycobacteria; preventing nausea, fighting viruses, tumours, bacteria, and inflammation;
protecting cells from damage; blocking protein kinase; activating PARP; and inhibiting histone acetylase.
