Abstract

This paper analyses the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in documenting,
conserving, and re-interpreting cultural heritage globally. With many museums facing unprecedented problems
in preserving and making available to digitally native audiences the large collections they hold, AI presents
itself as a key mechanism for bridging the gap between preservation and public engagement via the use of
traditional preservation techniques and those of today.
Empirical evidence synthesized from current case studies of museum digitization projects, digital archive
systems, and AI-driven conservation projects will be used to show how machine learning, computer vision,
natural language processing (NLP), and immersive technologies allow for both the preservation of, and creative
re-interpretation of, cultural artifacts.
The paper focuses on two complementary dimensions: (1) AI's application in preservation, including automated
digitization, predictive conservation models, and community-based documentation; and (2) AI's function in
creative innovation, supporting the creation of interactive and new artistic interpretations of cultural artifacts,
which maintain cultural authenticity. An evaluation of the ethical, legal, and practical implications of AI-based
cultural initiatives shows that only AI-based cultural initiatives that include community engagement, transparent
governance models, and adherence to international standards (UNESCO frameworks, UN cultural rights
protocols) can be successful.
The paper also demonstrates that when it is applied in a responsible manner, AI extends its technological
capabilities to create a democratizing effect -- allowing under-resourced institutions to preserve cultural heritage
at risk of being lost, reducing digital divides through multilingual access to digital platforms, and empowering
source communities to control their cultural stories. The paper provides an interdisciplinary approach to the
discussion of technology and cultural sustainabili ty, and offers empirically based recommendations to researchers, museum professionals, policymakers, and creative practitioners who are operating in the complex
nexus of artificial intelligence, cultural identity, and digital innovation in the twenty-first century.
