Abstract

Smart cities are changing fast with the addition of IoT, cloud computing, and AI. Yet, the higher connectivity also
translates into important security and privacy issues. This paper suggests a blockchain-based architecture to provide safe, decentralized data management and privacy protection in the context of smart cities. The architecture leverages distributed ledger technology, smart contracts, and encryption schemes to implement transparency, immutability, and selective privacy for city-scale applications like smart grids, healthcare, and traffic. We illustrate the effectiveness of the architecture using a prototype deployment and compare its performance in terms of latency, throughput, and security.
