A ROLE OF PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATION PROGRAMS IN BRIDGING THE SKILL GAPS

The global labour market is rapidly transforming due to technological advancements and digital disruption, exposing a
significant gap between academic education and employer expectations. This "skill gap" has become a critical challenge
for institutions, industries, and policymakers alike. The World Economic Forum (2023) estimates that nearly half the
global workforce will need reskilling within years, while McKinsey Global Institute (2022) highlights growing employer
demand for technological proficiency, emotional intelligence, and cognitive capabilities areas conventional education
largely underserves. Professional certification programs offered by bodies such as PMI, CFA Institute, Microsoft, and
AWS have emerged as a practical solution. Unlike traditional degrees, they deliver focused, industry-aligned, jobspecific
training in a time-efficient manner.This study empirically examines how certification programs impact skill
development, employability, and career progression at the individual level — an area underexplored despite extensive
macro-level research by organisations like the OECD and World Bank. Primary data was collected from students,
professionals, and job seekers to assess their experiences and outcomes.
