Environmental Catastrophe as seen in Swarga-The Posthumanist Tale

Examining how human and nonhuman worlds collide within toxic ecologies has become more
important in the Anthropocene, upending traditional narratives of agency, responsibility, and
survival. Swarga, a South Indian novel set against the Endosulfan poisoning crisis in Kasargod
accentuates such entanglements through its depiction of communities devastated by agrochemical
capitalism. The text underscores a system in which state-sanctioned pesticide regimes prioritised
plantation productivity over human and ecological welfare. Drawing on Rob Nixon's concept of
slow violence and posthumanist ecocritical frameworks,this paper argues that the novel functions
as a site of "entangled agencies," revealing how bodies like human, animal, vegetal, and chemical
interact under conditions of slow environmental harm.
