IPR and International Trade Agreements

Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) refer to the legal rights granted to creators and inventors over their
intangible creations, enabling them to control the use, reproduction, and commercialization of their works
for a specified period of time, thereby balancing private incentives with public interest; broadly, IPR encompasses ous categories such as patents, copyrights, trademarks, geographical indications, industrial various
designs, and trade secrets, each designed to protect different forms of intellectual output ranging from
technological innovations to artistic expressions and brand identities, and together they form a critical
component of modern legal and economic systems by encouraging creativity, innovation, and fair
competition. The scope of IPR is not confined to domestic legal frameworks but extends into the
international domain, where cross-border trade, technological exchange, and globalization necessitate
harmonized standards of protection and enforcement; historically, the evolution of IPR can be traced from
early national laws such as the Venetian Patent Statute of 1474 and the Statute of Anne of 1710 to the etablishment of international conventions like the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial
Property (1883) and the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works (1886), which laid the foundation for multilateral cooperation, and this trajectory eventually culminated in the integration of IPR into the global trade regime through the TRIPS Agreement under the aegis of the World Trade Oganization in 1995, marking a significant shift from a fragmented system to a more structured enforceable international framework.
