Building a sustainable healthcare system means looking both backward and
forward—drawing wisdom from the past while embracing the tools of the future. This paper,
“From Charaka to Chatbots: Machine Learning Applications in Sustainable Health
Management”, explores how the Indian Knowledge System (IKS), especially the Ayurvedic
insights of the Charaka Samhita, can meaningfully connect with today’s advances in machine
learning (ML).
Ayurveda has long emphasized prevention, balance, and harmony with the
environment—principles that feel especially urgent in the context of modern sustainability
goals. On the other side, machine learning is rapidly reshaping healthcare by enabling
predictive diagnostics, personalized treatments, smarter use of resources, and continuous
health monitoring through digital platforms. By looking at examples such as disease
prediction, antimicrobial resistance tracking, and AI-based wellness applications, this paper
shows how the wisdom of Ayurveda’s preventive philosophy can be brought to life through
modern AI technologies, while also helping to reduce costs and environmental strain on
healthcare systems.
Sustainable healthcare, however, is not just a matter of better technology—it is also about
values and vision. By bringing together Charaka’s holistic perspective with the precision and
efficiency of machine learning, we can move toward a model of care that is patient-centered,
ethically grounded, and resource-conscious. This blend of tradition and innovation offers a
way forward for global health that is both resilient and sustainable.
