Abstract

The adoption of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) accounting system has significantly transformed the financial and operational practices of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in India. This study examines the role of GST accounting systems in improving the operational efficiency of MSMEs by enhancing transparency, streamlining tax compliance, and promoting better financial management. The implementation of GST introduced a unified indirect tax structure that replaced multiple taxes, thereby reducing procedural complexities and facilitating ease of doing business.

The research focuses on how digital GST accounting systems help MSMEs maintain accurate records, automate invoicing, improve inventory management, and ensure timely tax filing. It also evaluates the impact of GST-enabled accounting software on cost reduction, productivity enhancement, and decision-making efficiency. The study highlights that the integration of technology-driven accounting practices has enabled MSMEs to minimize errors, reduce compliance burdens, and improve coordination with suppliers and customers through seamless input tax credit mechanisms.

Despite these advantages, MSMEs continue to face certain challenges such as lack of technical knowledge, high implementation costs, internet accessibility issues, and the need for continuous training and system upgrades. The study therefore emphasizes the importance of government support, awareness programs, and affordable digital infrastructure to ensure wider adoption among small businesses.
