Abstract
Abstract :
In an era defined by globalization, digital saturation, and systemic crises, a pervasive insensitivity
within human interactions has become a defining social malady. This paper argues that this growing
emotional detachment—manifested as empathy fatigue, communal disintegration, and the
normalization of violence—is not merely a sociological issue but a profound humanistic one. It posits
that literature, as a unique repository of human experience and a vehicle for complex narrative, serves
as a crucial antidote to this desensitization. Through its core mechanisms of fostering empathy via
character immersion, demanding critical reflection through defamiliarization, and preserving nuanced
historical and emotional testimony, literature actively re-sensitizes the individual and the collective.
By examining theoretical frameworks from philosophers like Martha Nussbaum and Suzanne Keen,
and analyzing literary examples from works such as Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner, George
Orwell’s 1984, and poetry by Warsan Shire, this paper demonstrates how the act of reading is an
ethical exercise. It concludes that in a world increasingly prone to simplification and indifference,
the sustained, deep engagement demanded by literature is not a luxury but a vital necessity for cultivating
the moral imagination required to rebuild a more compassionate and connected humanity.
