Abstract
The novel "Prodigal Summer" by Barbara Kingsolver intricately weaves themes of nature and gender, making it a compelling subject for eco-feminist analysis. This study explores the intersection of these themes within the narrative, which unfolds in rural Appalachia, where the natural world serves as a backdrop for the complex lives of its characters. This study delves into the eco-feminist perspective, examining how nature and gender are portrayed and interconnected. It highlights the representation of female characters as stewards of the land and ecosystems, emphasizing their roles as caretakers and advocates for environmental preservation. The eco-feminist analysis investigates how the female characters navigate a world where gender roles and societal expectations often clash with their desire for environmental stewardship and autonomy. It also explores the concept of eco-feminist spirituality and its connection to nature, as seen through the characters' relationships with the natural world. This paper uncovers how the novel challenges traditional gender norms and illuminates the potential for empowerment and agency through a deep connection to nature. Kingsolver's narrative invites readers to question the boundaries between the human and natural worlds, ultimately revealing the profound eco-feminist message within the pages of "Prodigal Summer." This analysis sheds light on the dynamic interplay between gender and nature and the potential for eco-feminist perspectives to foster a more harmonious relationship between humanity and the environment.
