Abstract

The women empowerment has an impact on the development of the nation. India has
achieved remarkable standing in the world with regard to gender equality as per the recent
Gender Gap report. Despite the representation of female in the political sphere is more
visible everywhere India lacks “women representation” in union and state legislature.
The democracy provides an environment for the safeguarding and realizing human rights.
India as the largest democratic country and having more than half woman population
lacks proper representation of women in legislature. The “women reservation bill which
discuss the women reservation in the parliament and state legislature” had been a matter
of critical debate in the parliament since in the mid of 90’s .Though the 73rd and 74th reform
of the Indian constitution provides for the women representation in local governmental
institutions the attempt to provide women reservation in concerned legislatures is
crystallised in the form of women reservation act 2023.The paper analyses the reasons for
the delay in passing of women reservation act ,The efforts for making it into a statute and
the lacuna in implementing the provisions of the act into effect. The study also concentrates
how women representation be a beneficial for the society.
