Abstract
Rapid urbanization in Indian cities has led to increased pressure on housing, often resulting in forced evictions of tenants. This paper critically examines the interplay between tenancy rights, forced evictions, and urban growth, within the context of Sustainable Development Goal 17 (SDG 17) – Partnerships for the Goals. Focusing on India, it analyzes the legal framework governing tenancy and eviction, highlighting gaps in protection for vulnerable tenants. The study argues that partnerships between government, private developers, and civil society are crucial to balancing urban growth with tenant rights. However, current partnerships often prioritize economic growth over social equity, exacerbating displacement. Recommendations include strengthening legal protections, promoting inclusive partnerships, and aligning urban policies with SDG 17 to ensure equitable urbanization.
