Abstract
Domestic Violence Against Women: A Legal and Social Analysis KEERTHANA L KEERTHANA L S PALANI YAMMAL S PALANI YAMMAL
• Domestic violence against women remains one of the most pervasive human rights violations across the world. Despite significant legal reforms and policy interventions, violence within the domestic sphere continues to affect women irrespective of socio-economic background, educational status, religion, or cultural identity. Domestic violence is not limited to physical abuse; it also includes emotional, verbal, sexual, and economic abuse, all of which have long-term consequences on the physical and psychological well-being of women. • In India, domestic violence has historically been treated as a private family matter rather than a public concern requiring legal intervention. However, increasing awareness, activism, and judicial intervention have shifted the discourse toward recognizing domestic violence as a serious legal and social issue. The enactment of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 marked a significant milestone in acknowledging women's right to live in a violence-free household.
