Abstract

The Medicinal Chemistry Practical Manual is a student-friendly laboratory guide that
covers fundamental experiments in the synthesis, assay, and physicochemical evaluation of
medicinal compounds. It is tailored to meet the academic requirements of pharmacy curricula
and to develop practical competencies in medicinal chemistry.
The book is divided into three major sections:
1. Synthetic Experiments – Including the preparation of important drug molecules such
as 7-hydroxy-4-methyl coumarin, benzimidazole, benzotriazole, sulfacetamide,
chlorbutol, phenothiazine, and phenytoin.
2. Assay Procedures – Encompassing the quantitative estimation of drugs like
isoniazid, chloroquine phosphate, ibuprofen, aspirin, and frusemide using official
methods.
3. Physicochemical Experiments – Covering partition coefficient studies of compounds
like benzoic acid, salicylic acid, and aspirin to provide insights into drug absorption
and distribution.
Each experiment is presented with a clear aim, principle, list of requirements, detailed
procedure, chemical reaction scheme, calculations, and reporting format. This systematic
approach makes the manual not only useful for practical classes but also a reliable reference
for examinations and research activities. The book is an indispensable resource for pharmacy
students, academicians, and laboratory instructors who wish to gain hands-on experience in
medicinal chemistry and drug analysis.
